“Irresistible.” (Le Monde)
The wonderful women from the movie “Tournée” (Mathieu Almaric, award for best director at Cannes 2010) now perform live! The icons of the American burlesque in their conquest of European stages were brought together by producer Kitty Hartl. Cabaret new Burlesque promises a nude girls galore, but no pocelain dolls! Ferociously funny, extremely rock’n'roll, spicy, heirs to a long and rich American tradition, the savvy performers of the Cabaret New Burlesque are among the best in the business who, through sauciness and excess (in language and body), know how to find elegance and poetry in the absurd. In a world congested with very exclusive beauty normative, this show celebrates difference and flashes the middle finger to the media propagated world of canons and political directives.
Kitten on the Keys - photo by Larry Utley Kitten on the Keys
The mistress of the ceremony of the show is Kitten on the Keys (Suzanne Ramsey), Her Burlesque Majesty from San Francisco. Award-winning and talented musician, fast on her tongue and bold on her piano, ukulele and accordion, Kitten embodies the spirit and style of the old days of decadence. The piano, what an irony, she learned to play in church, and drums in the psychedelic girl punk band White Strains. In the middle of the eighties she was a member of Sugar Babydoll with Courtney Love and she – survived. In the year 2007 she joined the tour of legendary London gothic punk band The Damned, together with Missy Malone and Kitten DeVille. She has also played the piano with the jazz legend Little Jimmy Scott in Las Vegas and hosted the Exotic World and the Burlesque Hall of Fame.
Dirty Martini Dirty Martini
She is one of the most famous and most adorned artists of the new burlesque and a queer icon. She grew up in a small town in New Jersey and always loved to dance. But all her teachers told her she is too fat and that, if she wanted to succeed, she needed to get her weight down to 45 kilos. She was drawn to burlesque as the genre celebrating all body types. Her master reinterpretation of classical burlesque routines (whether it is the balloon pop striptease, oriental fans or the seven veil dance) is enhanced twofold by her incredible grace. The act with the song “God Bless The USA” by Lee Greenwood where she incarnates the figure of justice who breaks free from her clothes only to find more and more hidden dollars confirms the extreme political engagement of this superstar. At the New York Burlesque Festival, in spite of her former teachers, for three years in a row she won the title of “Best Body in Burlesque”.
Julie Atlas Muz - photo by D R Julie Atlas Muz
She is one of the most renowned and fruitful conceptual artists and choreographers in New York, and in her work she erases borders between performance art, dance and burlesque with dark and twisted acts which secured her place in the underground night life, as well as in strongholds of the artistic world. Her routines, with titles such as “I Am The Moon and You Are The Man On Me”, are real mini-masterpieces. Regardless of whether she performs in the basements of gay clubs or at well-known theatre addresses, Julie brings stories which are beautiful, political and emotional. Jo Weldon, the director of the New York School of Burlesque, said about her friend: ”Julie weaves dancing and clowning together like nobody else.” In 2006 and 2010 she won the Miss Exotic World title. Her work is either praised or despised. Or as the Village Voice nicely puts it: “Funny. Disturbing. Magnificent. Hideous.”
Mimi le Meaux - photo by Karl Giant MiMi Le Meaux
Born as Miranda Colclasure in San Diego, MiMi Le Meaux is a formidable force in burlesque. In the middle of nineties together with fetish pioneer Mistress Persephone she founded the duo Dames in Dis Dress, project at the origin of burlesque revival. With direct roots in striptease acts of the fifties, her work has strong ties with garage and punk rock music (she also performed with The Damned) and the aesthetic quality that can be found in cult B movies. She is the tattooed blond bombshell – Marilyn Monroe of our days.
Catherine D'Lish - photo by Sean Mccall Catherine D’Lish
Miss D’Lish is one of the most awarded and influential performers of burlesque today. This close friend and personal choreographer of Dita Von Teese owns one of the most impressive careers in burlesque. Her signature act is the one where she bathes in a gigantic champagne glass – on this idea Dita’s world known Martini glass bath is based. Catherine D’Lish embodies the sensual moves of past burlesque stars, celebrating glamour, sex appeal and classical beauty. Immodesty Blaize describes the flame haired veteran as “Jessica Rabbit incarnate”. Joining of this true legend of the genre with Cabaret New Burlesque tour is a true privilege.
Roky Roulette - photo by Don Spiro Roky Roulette
The only “pogo-stripper” in the world, Roky Roulette is a performer of strong and contagious energy. One of the pioneers of the San Francisco boylesque, on the stage he transforms into a charged punk rock version of a cowboy, astronaut or Louis XIV himself. This family man, father of two girls, in real life going by the name of Alexander Craven and working in a photo studio, was proclaimed a gay icon by the biggest French gay magazine Têtu. In the evening of Cabaret New Burlesque which celebrates the female energy on stage, he brings forth a dose of exploding testosterone with a regular ecstatic reaction from the female audience members.
