“ANECKXANDER
” is a tragical autobiography of the body. It examines how the gaze of the Other reduces our identity to a number of physical/external features: disproportions, vulnerabilities etc. Alexander Vantournhout  tries to escape from this reduction by always taking different physical shapes. The objects on stage are used to correct/camouflage the “mistakes” of the performer’s body: he uses the platform shoes (Buffalo shoes) in order to compensate his short legs or boxing gloves to protect his wrists. However, as it often comes with disguise, these ‘prostheses’ more often emphasize the vulnerability of his body instead of compensating them.

_mg_2453“The idea of this performance originated a long time ago in a workshop in which a dancer told me I had a very long neck. I didn’t know him, but somehow he knew me. He even knew my name, and he joked around with calling me Aneckxander instead of Alexander. It stroke me that he dared to joke around with someone he had just met. Anyhow this incident stimulated me to analyze my body. Before I knew something was wrong with my physical proportions, but I couldn’t locate the ‘problem’. This incident triggered me to reflect on the conventionalized perception we have of the body”, says Alexander about the first Festival novog cirkusa‘s co-production we present this year.

This movement research piece is performed naked. The body bends into bizarre and confronting positions. In this way, the thin line between horror and empathy is simultaneously being explored and exposed. This line builds a possible bridge between the solitude of the solo artist and the Other, his audience. The artist focuses on pain and obsession (emotions which the Other does not need) and situations of relational loneliness (e.g. shame). Through the engagement in the seemingly pointless actions with seemingly random objects, the tragic human being is being manifested.

ANECKXANDER_photo_by_Bart-Grietens2Alexander Vantournhout studied at ESAC (Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque) in Brussels, where he specialized the Cyr wheel and in 2010 he enrolled at P.A.R.T.S (Performing Arts Research and Training Studios), the Brussels-based school of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. He created several solo performances. “Caprices” (2014) is a circus choreography dedicated to the music of Salvatore Sciarrino, while his “ANECKXANDER” (co-created with Bauke Lievens) is the laureate of Circus Next 2013-2014. He likes to cooperate with musicians: Alexander and Niko Hafkenscheid created the performance “Don’t run away” (2012), while Harald Austbo was his partner in the improvisation “Wak” (2015), which will be presented at this year’s festival too, on November 12. As an interpret he worked with Rolf Alme in “A Clockwork Orange, Fucking Men” (2013). Alexander regularly teaches circus and dance at ESAC and ACAPA (Academy for circus and performance art, Tilburg, Netherlands).
