Bambola is the Italian word for a doll. In German, bambule means a struggle/fight. And just like there is a cocktail named Bamboula, the name of the performance “Bambula” is a cocktail mix of two meanings that the word implies in Italian and German.
“Bambula” solo was created as a part of “Rio bar study”. Its objective, among other things, is to answer the question which choreographic means and tools make it possible to approach the novel “Rio bar”, written by the renowned Croatian dramatist Ivana Sajko. Although drawing inspiration from the written template, the performative translation is not being forced upon, original material correlates with the book in an independent coexistence. The authors, Julia Christ and Ante Ursić, had several reasons to avoid the subject of the last Balkan war, omnipresent in the novel. Instead, they seek the connections between the protagonists of the novel and themselves, through the described states of emotions, for example.
“Bambula” solo performance is dedicated to the matter of the body as a container of memories, the site of continuous battles of the Self divided within. The dimensions of that Self become blurred, opaque. Reality and imagination, lucidity and delusion, subject and object become devoid of their unique meaning. The stage, advertently allowing for various interpretations, consciously disavows the outside world and represents the emotional state of the performer.
Hence, the authors bring up stratified questions in the performance: which memories motivate us? Which toughen us? To which extent are we the objects of our remembrances? Can we escape them? Can we become absolved of memories? Which strategies develop during that process? Is it possible to construct the “new Self”? Does the possibility of reconciliation exist?

“Bambula” is Nova Voda Company’s opening work. The company was co-founded by the German Croat, tightrope and devilstick artist Ante Ursić and Julia Christ, who was educated as a dancer (“Martha Graham”) and acrobat (Die Etage), and graduated equilibristics from ESAC in Brussels. She gained additional knowledge and experience from Ultima Vez Company (Brussels), Fatou Traoré (Brussels) and Hanna Hegenscheidt and she cooperated with numerous Belgian and French circus and dance companies including Feria Musica, La MCNN and Gilles Baron. Ante was artistically educated at circus schools of Berlin, Moscow and Brussels. After his award-winning solo performances, as well as the duo performance Oko Sokolo, he became a student of “Contemporary Dance, Context and Choreography” at the Cooperative Dance Education Center of The Berlin University of the Arts. From the start of November, he is living in Canada where he is to star as the lead of the new show of Cirque du Soleil directed by Robert Lepage.
