Italian bondage master coming to Bestiarum
The Italian bondage master Andrea Ropes is arriving in June in Zagreb to Bestiarum fetish feast where he will demonstrate shibari, the bondage technique carrying a strong sexual charge in SM circles.
Andrea Ropes organizes once a month in Bologna the Shibari Atelier where those who bind and those who are bound get together. His goal is to create a place of experiment ing and experience sharing with this Japanese bondage technique. “I don’t use bondage to inflict pain”, claims the shibari teacher from Modena, “I use it to give women what they deserve… pleasure!”
The everyday of the Land of the Rising Sun is full of bondage examples, from the best known kimono (with no buttons) to war armour (where wood is bound together) or gifts which have to be intricately packed and tied (furoshiki or mizuhiki technique) . Shibari itself has its roots in times of war in the 15th and 16th century when techniques of fighting, torture and imprisonment rapidly developed – hojojutsu is the most well known traditional Japanese technique of restraining opponents using rope. In later periods bondage was also developed through the human need for entertainment – the most popular form was Kabuki theatre which included romantic and sexual scenes (nureba), as well as those of torture (semega). After WWII, the Japanese middle class demanded new forms of entertainment and stimulation so first clubs for bondage photography and the first shibari performance clubs were started. Today, owing thanks to the great expansion of fetish culture and SM, the art of bondage has acquired a world audience.
